| Subject: | Roseate Tern on Jekyll Island- May 10 evening |
| Content-Type: | text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed |
Hello everyone- Sorry for the belated report, but I saw an adult Roseate
Tern on Jekyll Island South Beach- it was observed from roughly 7:45
until 8:15 pm on May 10. It was resting along with many other terns
(including 3 Common, 15+ Forster's, 6 Sandwich, 1 Caspian, and many many
Royal) and over 200 Black Skimmer. It had a complete black cap, very
pale whitish underparts, black bill with a very small touch of red at
the base of the lower mandible, very long tail (extended well beyond the
folded wings), wings mostly medium gray (same color as upperparts) with
the outer primaries darker-- all primaries had pale inner web very
apparent when folded. I rechecked for the tern on the morning and
afternoon of the 11th but did not see it again. If you're in the area,
check those terns! I was not aware it was such a good bird for Georgia
until later, so I will dutifully submit my notes including a sketch made
on the spot to the Georgia Rare Birds Records Committee.
The coast is hopping with many birds- I was there until yesterday late
afternoon- if anyone wants details on what else I saw, please let me know.
Good birding, Alan
