If you want AREA to be in your model you need to tell me exactly *how* you want it in the model. Do you want a random slope? A random intercept? Do you want AREA to be a random effect? What does the rest of your model look like? Is AREA nested or cossed with anything?

It would really be a lot simpler if you would just write down the mathematical formula you are envisioning for the mixed model, so all the interested SAS-Lers could see what you really want.
