I've found this paper (I was looking for something different, as it happens):

Harwell MR & Serlin RC "An Empirical Study of a Proposed Test of Nonparametric Analysis of Covariance" Psycological Bulletin 1988 104 268-81

(if you don't have access to the journal, I can send you a copy)

It might be interesting.
