It seems illogical but true that many commercially harvested mollusks are very difficult to obtain as good quality specimen shells. Add to the list several N. Atlantic scallops and any number of gastropods, and many species that can be purchased by the basket full in Tokyo fish markets, including Turbo cornutus and several volutes. Apparently people who are handling them en masse either have trouble taking time to put aside prime specimens, or imagining that they might have any value beyond the going market price. ----- Original Message ----- From: Marshalldg@AOL.COM<mailto:Marshalldg@AOL.COM> To: CONCH-L@LISTSERV.UGA.EDU<mailto:CONCH-L@LISTSERV.UGA.EDU> Sent: Thursday, March 23, 2006 6:57 AM Subject: Re: Russian deep sea scallops

our local fish market was selling large scallop muscles (about 2X the Digby scallops), Russian deep sea scallops. Does anyone know what species this would be? and any info on the fishery?

Dear Rick I did some extensive research and there are at least 8 species of scallops with at least 3 unnamed species coming from the area between Tokyo and Portland. I hope you stocked up on those scallops because when I purchase them from dealers they are $50 or more a shell, so I can never amass enough to actually compare in depth. Carole Marshall

P.S. sorry to the list, but Rick did you get my e-mail asking you to give a talk to COA??? E-mail me at Marshalldg@aol.com Thanks, Carole
