I'll answer this on the list, because others may benefit. (see question below)
I went to the website and it's true that the three options do not apply to changing a setting. We mentioned this to the LISTSERV folks at UGA and nothing really can be done (or has been done). So here's what you can do:
SAVE THIS FOR WHEN YOU MAY NEED IT:
------------------------------------
send a message to listserv@listserv.uga.edu (NOTE the address is listserv@...not gabo-l@.....)
in the body type
set GABO-L NOMAIL
This will turn off messages temporarily (for when you take that trip to Costa Rica or Villa Rica for that matter).
When you return tan, rested and ready
send a message to listserv@listserv.uga.edu (NOTE the address is listserv@...not gabo-l@.....)
in the body type
set GABO-L MAIL
This will turn messages back on.
-------------------------------------
(and while I'm here.....don't forget to sign your messages with your name and location, it also helps when reading in digest mode to enter a blank line before the signature).
Thanks for keeping this list civil, pertinent, and active.

I have been out of town for several days. Before leaving I wanted to stop receiving posts to the GABO-L list, while I was gone. I went to:
www.listserv.uga.edu.archives/gabo-l.html . There I clicked on Join or leave the list [or changed settings]. At the Join or leave the list page, I clicked on Mail delivery disabled temporarily. There are three buttons at the bottom, of that page. None of them applied to my situation. I decided Leave the list was the closest to my situation, and clicked it. That was the wrong thing to do. I soon received a confirmation of my removal from the GABO-L list. I did not want to leave the list permanently - just to stop receiving posts while I was gone. Which button should I have used?
