This is hugely important issue and should be of interest and importance to all Georgia birders. In fact, Steve Holzman was the first to post an alert about the situation. If you'll recall, he also set up a site where folks can discuss it. There's some very good information there. I quote his message below.

Looks like they are at it again:

"H.B. 1232 amends Code Section 40-2-34 so that "all funds from motor vehicle registrations or the sale of any license plates and remitted to the state shall be deposited in the general fund of the state treasury unless otherwise specifically authorized by the Constitution and provided for in this chapter." H.B. 1232 specifically amends Section 40-2-49 so that funds derived from the sale of nongame wildlife license plates shall be deposited into the general fund of the state treasury and not into the Nongame Wildlife Conservation and Wildlife Habitat Acquisitions Fund. This change will effectively eliminate all funding derived from volunteer license plate sales in support of nongame wildlife conservation in Georgia. "

Nongame birds in Georgia have benefitted a huge amount from license plate sales. This bill is in committee (Motor Vehicles) and you can express your concerns to Tom Rice at 404-656-5912 in addition to your local House member.

This is only intended to alert Georgia Birders to the issue. If you want to discuss the matter, please do so at:
