GABbers- As a followup to Vic Williams post, here are the exact directions
to get to Sweetwater Creek State Park with Mount Vernon Road (the road
featured in Birding Georgia) closed at the lake. The maps on pages 68 and 69
of Birding Georgia show all of the roads discussed below.
From east or west, take Exit 41 off I-20, this is Lee Road. Turn south, and
start your odometer at the light for the service road on the south side of
the interstate. Go south 0.9 mile to Cedar Terrace Road, and turn left. This
turn is after the Shell gas station and before the Chevron station. As Vic
said, there are orange detour signs here. Go 0.8 mile on Cedar Terrace and
it dead-ends into Mount Vernon, and you can proceed anywhere in the park
from here. The boat ramp, usually the first place to scan the lake, is
straight ahead.
