I went out this morning to Garden Lakes in search of the Long-tailed Ducks
seen there yesterday. No luck, and also no Greater Scaup. Since I'd seen the
Long-tails fly north away from the lake, I then headed to Berry College to
check various water bodies on campus. The large reservoir on Lavender Mt.
yielded only a couple dozen Ring-necked Ducks, though I couldn't see into
many of the inlets and side channels. The Possum Trot Rd. pond was filled
with Gadwall and a few Ring-necks. Victory Lake was rife with Mallards and a
few American Wigeon, and one stunning Northern Pintail drake hove into view
as I scanned the upper end of the lake, but no Long-tailed Ducks anywhere.
Checked Garden Lakes again at noon and in the late afternoon without
success, but perhaps later in the week. You never know.
