Got an early start birding this morning and it paid off! Highlights include: A. Oxbow Meadows, lake near Learning Center Anhinga (6) Canada Goose (too many to count! Also a Canada/Greater White-fronted hybrid!) Red-Eyed Vireo(1) Gadwall (4) Mallard (2) Blue-winged Teal(2) Red-Shouldered Hawk (1) Rusty Blackbird (about 20) B. Oxbow Meadows, Landfill environs: Common Yellowthroat (4) Barred Owl (v.o.) Marsh Wren (2) Prairie Warbler(1) Magnolia Warbler (1) American Kestrel (1) Cooper's Hawk (1) Tree Swallow (1, among Rough-Wings) Barn Swallow (3) C. South Columbus Water Resource Facility: Pileated Woodpecker (1, flying N across Access Road) Northern Harrier (1, immature, flying low over application field) Palm Warbler (12) Indigo Bunting (2) Blue Grosbeak (1) D. Riverwalk 'South Trail' (from SCWRF to Rigdon Park): Red-Headed Woodpecker (2, flying across river to Alabama, 1 flew back) Cattle Egret (1, saw it perched on a snag hanging over river; first impression was that of Little Blue Heron, but the short yellow bill, stocky appearance and small amount of rusty on the back led me to this species. Consulted Sibley's Guide to Birds for confirmation.) American Redstart (2) E. Riverwalk Exit onto Rigdon Park: Loggerhead Shrike (1, perched on fence by the pool; flew onto water slide) Turkey Vulture (2, soaring over Rigdon Park) John F. McMahan Columbus
