Subject:   Newbie: lsmeans vs. means in proc glm
Content-Type:   text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1

Hi,

I'm a newbie in both sas and statistics. I would like to ask about the difference between lsmeans and means statements in proc glm.

Sas-documentation says that "LS-means are to unbalanced designs as class and subclass arithmetic means are to balanced designs."

1) What does balanced and unblanced designs mean? 2) When should I use lsmeans and when means statement? 3) I've noticed that if I use means in proc glm, in the log file there's a note saying that if I wanted an adjusted mean, I should use lsmeans. Does that mean it would be better to use lsmeans and if so then why? 4) Could somebody give me an example on the differences between these two?

Thanks, Jorma, Finland
