Why does this strike people as a bad idea?

These OSsa are less reliable, with fewer features and a host of shortcomings. We think nothing of upgrading our disk drives or our RAM memory in order to accomodate newer and bigger programs or data sets. So why shouldn't we think of upgrading our OS as well?

Look at it as A Good Thing (tm). You want an OS which won't break at untoward moments. Which can handle larger data sets. Which has the security features and multi-user capabilities needed. Go ahead and install XP (or linux, or whatever you prefer). You'll be glad you did.

Well, you'll be glad when you're *done*, anyway. :-)
