The original poster asked about 'mainframe SAS.'  It appears that all
responses interpreted this to be running SAS in MVS background, which
does not always apply.  I ran SAS on a VM/CMS system for many years -
no JCL there.  I also ran SAS in TSO on an MVS system - no JCL
involved as well.
