Hi Egon,

yes, the variable names can exceed 8 chars limit in SPSS12.

"the variable name limit has been expanded from eight bytes to 64 bytes.." from "What’s new in SPSS 12.0 for Windows"

I am running into a problem when trying to export to an existing database.

I am trying to export to data to a SQL database using the SAVE TRANSLATE ..../APPEND. but I am running into trouble with the variable names. The variable name in SPSS has to match the column name in the SQL database where I need to export the data in order successfully export. However, in more than one instance, the column name in the SQL database ecceeds 8 characters in length (f.i. SQL = medicalrecordnumber / SPSS = medicalr). I don't have the ability to change the column names in the SQL server, so I have to be able to deal with this problem in the SPSS side.

I am using SPSS 11.5

On a separate, but related, issue; does SPSS v12 allow the use of variable names to exeed 8 characters?

Thanks

Egon
