Subject: Coastal Bird Festival from Little St. Simons

Fellow GABO'ers,

We at Little St. Simons, would like to thank everyone involved in the inaugural Coastal Bird Festival held at Jekyll Island this past weekend. Everyone considered it to be a huge success and it was a wonderful experience for countless folks. Thank you so much to Lydia and everyone involved with getting the festival up and running. Thank you to all the folks that came over to Little St. Simons on Saturday and Sunday, which those tours were led by Giff Beaton. Thank you to Giff as well for leading those tours. If you didn't hear, we had some great days during those trips.

Each trip had different results, but on Saturday the highlights included one Clay-colored Sparrow and one Western Kingbird. They also got a chance to see some Northern Shovelers, Northern Pintails, and a lot of Mottled Ducks. Correct me if I am wrong Giff, but I believe they got 91 species on Saturday. Then, on Sunday, while our species count wasn't as high, we were treated to a long look at a Peregrine Falcon perched in a tree. We saw a total of 4 Peregrines on Sunday and a couple of Merlins. We also got to see three different Bald Eagles, with two adults and one two year old. We got to see some Bobolinks flying overhead. The Long- billed Curlews were seen both days as well as Great Black Backed Gulls. The Lesser Black Backed Gull was seen on Saturday, but not Sunday. I counted 82 as a count for us on Sunday.

Overall, it was a wonderful weekend on Little St. Simons and Jekyll Island. Thank you again to all parties involved in making this happen. While everyone on Little St. Simons were picked up and carried by mosquitoes and rain, it didn't dampen anyones spirits. We all look forward to next year already! Happy birding!

Sincerely, Brandon L. Noel Naturalist on Little St. Simons Island, Glynn County, Southeast Georgia lssinat@mindspring.com http://littlestsimonsisland.com http://lssinaturalist.com/myweb3
