This past Sunday, Earl Horn and I birded southwest Georgia, primarily in
Quitman Co. in the morning and Randolph Co. in the afternoon. The early
morning was pretty good, but by mid morning the winds had picked up and the
birds became hard to find. We ended up with 14 species of warbler,
including a couple of Blue-wings and a nice sized flock of Palms in Quitman Co.
Prior to sunrise, we listened for nightjars, owls and thrushes in northern
Quitman Co. off of GA 39. No nightjars unfortunately, but the owls (Great
Horned, Barred and Eastern Screech-Owl) were quite vocal, and we also heard
quite a few thrushes (mostly Swainson's). A few Black-crowned Night-Herons
flying over (two were over GA 39 near the Quitman/Stewart Co. line, and the
other was over CR 3 in northern Quitman Co.) were a surprise as well.
Here are some other highlights for the day:
Bald Eagle (white-bellied adolescent) - 1; Cool Branch Park, Quitman Co.;
this park is signified by the boat landing symbol on DeLorme p. 48 grid
D-"0," south of Georgetown along Lake Walter F. George.
Yellow-billed Cuckoo - 8 (3 in Quitman Co., 5 in Randolph Co.); good day
for seeing this species.
Eastern Screech-Owl - 10; various locations in Quitman Co., with 7 along CR 3
Great Horned Owl - 2; CR 3, Quitman Co.
Barred Owl - 3; CR 3 Quitman Co.
Hairy Woodpecker - 1; Cool Branch Park, Quitman Co.
Acadian Flycatcher - 10 (4 in Quitman, 6 in Randolph); a good day for this
species as well.
Veery - 8; CR 3, Quitman Co.
Gray-cheeked Thrush - 2; CR 3, Quitman Co.
Swainson's Thrush - 125; CR 3, Quitman Co.
Wood Thrush - 14
Fourteen species of warbler: Blue-winged (2), Tennessee (3), Northern
Parula (13), Chestnut-sided (8), Magnolia (4), Black-throated Green (1),
Blackburnian (1), Pine (27), Palm (24), Black-and-white (4), American
Redstart (12), Ovenbird (1), Common Yellowthroat (6), Hooded (14)
Tanagers: Summer (5), Scarlet (7)
Only one Rose-breasted Grosbeak, at Cool Branch Park, Quitman Co.
Take care.
