GABbers: Here are a couple of interesting sightings from the last few days...
7/4 To begin the annual "migrant vs. post-breeding wandering" debate, we
had 2 adult male Black-throated Green Warblers at KMT on the first day of
"fall." The closest known nesting location in Pine Log WMA, around 25 miles
away. I doubt that these birds are actually purposefully headed south yet,
but I do not think they breed here either.
7/4 There is a new reservoir just north of Dahlonega along US 19, I don't
know the name but it is fed by Yahoola Creek and maybe Ward Creek. It has
barely started filling, but there were 4 Great Egrets here.
7/5 There was a singing Ovenbird in McDuffie County along Fish Dam Road
about 1.1 miles west of GA 43 (DeLorme 30 E2). This is just barely north of
the Fall Line, and adds to the number of breeding or possible breeding
Ovenbird reports near the Fall Line in Bibb County (2003 Annotated
Checklist) and on both sides of the border near Augusta by Paul Champlin
(posts to GABO and pers comm). There were also a number of reports of birds
singing very late in May near the Fall Line on the BBA project, and I and
others have noted singing birds in late May or early June at Yuchi WMA in
Burke County, though I was there for several hours yesterday and did not
hear any.
