Well, I was planning on doing it in a macro loop, so as I envision it I'd only be sending out one ping at a time. That may take a while though.

But that's still a lot of sites to ping. Isn't this going to lead to a network traffic issue?

As far as I know, Perl installs fairly easily on MVS even without HFS. But your admin group may not want to have to support Perl on your big iron. If you do get Perl and use that, then check out the many modules on CPAN which have ping features, starting with (of course) Net::Ping and going on to ones with additional ICMP and even ARP-ping facilities.
