Today, December 6th I birded Carters Lake and found two White-winged
Scoter at the Reregulation Dam Recreation Area. I last saw the two
birds on the north side of the dam. There was also 4 Red-breasted
Merganser in the same area. There were 18 Bonaparte's Gulls and 10
Horned Grebe scattered in the reservoir.
To reach the area where the scoters and mergansers were last seen
shortly before sunset take Highway 411 north and turn right at the
Carters Lake sign onto Highway 136 East. Drive .4 miles and turn left
onto Old Highway 411. Drive 1.6 miles and turn right on Reservoir
Road. Where the road turns right you can go straight ahead and park at
the gate with two Stop Signs on it. You can go around the gate and
scope the reservoir. There are other viewing areas one of them can be
reached by leaving this area and turn right onto Old 411 and driving .8
miles and turning right to the Powerhouse area. (Delorme 10 F)
At the entrance to Salacoa Park there was a Blue-headed Vireo and two
Red-breasted Nuthatch. At this spot 280 Sandhill Crane flew over. They
were in 3 separate groups. (Delorme 9 D) Salacoa Park is closed.
