We experienced "similar" results. In my 20 years of working with SAS on MVS and OS/390, I'd say that each new version or release (SAS 79.5 thru 8.1) has: * added functionality * used more memory * used more CPU * run faster (from a "wallclock", not CPU, perspective)

I don't know that it's possible to "rectify" it. However, from time to time you may find that new functionality presents an opportunity to do things more efficiently; if you're willing and able to modify old code, you may be able to get diminish the effects of SAS's larger footprint.

There are a few issues here and there, particularly if you still have some Version 5 data and format libraries around.
