I can't speak to Java, as I haven't learned it... yet.

I never considered Perl a "relevant sidekick" to Java, but I would start with the O'Reilly books "Learning Perl," then "Programming Perl." They are co-authored by Larry Wall, who is the Father of Perl.

And Java is NOT JavaScript. They have similar syntax, but serve different purposes.
