Hello Conchlers,
Man and Mollusc has started a brand new venture. "Children's Books"!
It has always been my desire to learn more about the wonderful world of molluscs. With the advent of the WWW, I found a seemingly unending source of knowledge. I then wanted to share what I had learned. Thus in 1999 I started the Man and Mollusc web site. My home page stated then as is does today: "The Resource Site for Students, Educators, and anyone wanting to learn more about the fascinating world of, THE MOLLUSCS".
There is so much literature available for adults or senior students on molluscs, yet so very little for the younger child. As children are our future, we as their educators are responsible for giving them the formative training to mold their young minds.
Since the beginning of time, molluscs have played a very important role in our societies. Yet many children, (unless they are raised by the seashore) know very little about this the second largest phyla of animals. Children may have a few shells personally or they know that Great Aunt or Uncle have a few shells sitting on dusty shelves in their office; yet very few younger
children are actually aware that that shell once was the home of a living animal. Even in our schools, children seldom learn of this fascinating phyla until about grade 7.
I commissioned three friends, all from British Columbia, Canada, to help me write and illustrate "Sammy's Adventure" and I have now published this, the very first of a proposed series of mollusc-related children's story books. Each book is about a different mollusc and although fiction, the stories are indeed based on science. This science is placed at the end of each story giving the adult in that child's life a little knowledge and further direction to finding more information on this subject.
There is, of course, a commercial bit to this letter; books are not cheap to produce and thus they must be sold. If you, your business or shell club are interested in the financial details, please contact me in private. If you would like a flyer and accompanying order form please send you snail mail address to me as well. Details can also be found on Man and Mollusc web site at: http://www.manandmollusc.net/sammys_adventure_promo.html
There is a commercial discount for businesses and I also offer a special deal for shell clubs so that your club may also benefit from the sales of this book.
I have made many wonderful e-friends on this GREAT Conch-L listserve and for this I am most thankful. For this, I am most grateful. I hope you as well as many of your children /grandchildren,etc. enjoy our story and I hope that the kids learn a bit more about these wonderful animals we share our planet with.
All the best,
Avril Bourquin
