perhaps cr**zy is a bit strong

If they can't make enough profit by using sas to pay for its licence fee, then sure, sas is not the tool for them. But I would expect anyone who is not making profits is unlikely to change that situation, by investing in a replacement of a sas system that is used sensibly !

good luck to them !

Betreff: Re: Replace SAS with another language Nachrichtentext:

I think they are cr**zy! How many years of licensing fees will $2 million dollars pay for? I don't know what language they want to convert it to, but I guarantee it will cost more to maintain than the SAS. They would probably be much better off applying the 2 million to the licensing fees than to the conversion.

I know someone whose company is considering replacing two to three hundred thousand lines of SAS code in Base, Stat, a little IML, and lots of macro to some other language. Part of this project would include developing tools to "compile" the SAS code into some other language. This is motivated by the desire to avoid the SAS licensing fees. How big a project do you think this is? Is it doable? The company may be willing to spen a couple million dollars on the project. What do you think?
