May I suggest that we test the subscription theory?  I suggest leaving the subscription
process as is (without validation) and simply require subscription for posting.
 It certainly wouldn't take long to see if the spam stops, though I'm not sure
how we could find out if any legitimate in-bound mail was bouncing.
