Subject: Changes to the AOU Check-list
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII"

The July 2002 issue of The Auk contains the 43rd Supplement to The AOU Check-list of North American Birds, and impacts the Georgia Checklist in five places.

The scientific name of Roseate Spoonbill is changed from Ajaia ajaja to Platalea ajaja.

The scientific name of of Purple Gallinule is changed from Porphyrula martinica to Porphyrio martinica.

The Common Snipe is split into two species. Our snipe becomes the Wilson's Snipe Gallinago delicata and the Eurasian bird retains the name Common Snipe Gallinago gallinago. The 7th edition of the AOU Check-list cites some western Alaska and Labrador records of G gallinago so some birders may have seen the old world snipe there.

The scientific name of the Red Phalarope is changed from Phalaropus fulicaria to Phalaropus fulicarius.

The scientific name of the Blue Grosbeak is changed from Guiraca caerulea to Passerina caerulea, putting it in the same genus as the Lazuli, Indigo and Painted Bunting.

In the larger ABA area, the AOU has moved the Kelp Gull from the appendix (hypo- thetical list) to the main list for records on the Chandelier Islands, LA and records in MD and TX. The Black-crested Titmouse Baeolophus atricristatus returns as a full species having been resplit from the Tufted Titmouse Baeotophus bicolor. The Eared Trogon is renamed the Eared Quetzal. US records of Loggerhead Kingbird are no longer recognized.

Taxonomic proposals being considered but not yet accepted (or rejected) include spltting the Cory's Shearwater, Green-winged Teal, Cave Swallow, and Curve-billed Thrasher.

An updated list of the birds known from the AOU Check-list area may be assessed at http://www.AOU.org/aou/birdlist.html.
