Subject: Today I fired three sales people.
When I first hired them four months ago, they seemed polished, aggressive
and capable. They looked great on paper and I'm not entirely sure what
went wrong. One of the guys was great with existing customers, but
couldn't develop any new business. The other two just never really caught
the vision. They came close to making quota once, but nothing really
outstanding. I thought I was hiring top performers, or at least someone
who could learn to become a top performer. Why couldn't I see their
shortcomings in the interview? Now I've wasted a lot of time, invested in
a bunch of training, and worst of all, lost four months of sales. How can
I avoid making the same mistake again? Does hiring have to be so random?
