This problem with myexcel.sas seems to disappear in SAS version 8.2 for
OpenVMS. That is, it executes as expected (faster than 6.12, but not as
optimal as my solution of using "newexcel.sas" and csvdfine.sas).
Definitely better than V6.12. So whatever the reason, it seems to have
been resolved in V8.2. However, we are still not ready to convert our
applications to V8.2 as yet due to other issues with our environment.
Whatever the case may be, in V8.2 creating macro variables in loops does
not seem to be a problem, at least in my situation.
