Earl Horn and I birded south Georgia yesterday, concentrating on Reed Bingham SP (Cook & Colquitt Cos., west of Adel) and Paradise Public Fishing Area (Berrien Co., east of Tifton). Both of these areas have produced some pretty neat stuff over the past year or so, and although we didn't find anything rare, we did see a lot of birds.

We started early in the morning looking for owls in Cook, Colquitt and Berrien Cos. It was one of those quiet windless nights and the Barred and Eastern Screech-Owls were very vocal. At one location along the Little River on the Cook/Colquitt Co. line outside of Lenox, GA, we had five Barred Owls and one Ea. Screech Owl calling at once. At another location along Warrior Creek in eastern Colquitt Co. we had seven Ea. Screech Owls calling at once. We also had five Barred Owls in Berrien Co., although three of the five were heard during the day at various locations.

Yellow-throated Vireos were found in several areas; Northern Parulas were everywhere, as were White-eyed Vireos and Blue-gray Gnatcatchers (we found one female gathering lichens for her nest); a couple of Vesper Sparrows outside of Reed Bingham SP in Colquitt Co.; Barn Swallows were in several locations (but not in the abundance they will be over the next couple of weeks); three Cattle Egrets north of Nashville; and at Reed Bingham State Park, we observed 6 Boat-tailed Grackles (I assume the Q. m. westoni race; I know that they are regularly found here and in scattered locations in south Georgia, but it is just really cool to see this species so far inland in Georgia).

Here is a run down of the species that we observed yesterday in various areas:
