Hi there,
Aubrey Scott and I spent the day birding Phinizy Swamp and the Merry Bros.
Brickyard Ponds (Boral) in Augusta. We didn't have anything too unusual,
but we did observe good numbers of several species.
The highlights at Phinizy Swamp were:
Sora - 35+ they seemed to be calling everywhere
Virginia Rail - 8
King Rail - 3
American Bittern - 2-3
Marsh Wren - stopped counting at 40 (they responded well to a Sora tape)
LIncoln's Sparrow - 2 probable (we didn't get great looks)
Barn Owl - 1 in one of the silos
Pectoral Sandpiper - 1 seems late?
Not too many highlights at Merry Bros.
White-crowned Sparrow - 1 adult
Black-crowned Night-Heron -1
Very few ducks.
We also saw the Calliope Hummingbird coming to the feeder of Betsy Ristroph
in the early afternoon. Thanks to Betsy for allowing many birders to see
this beautiful adult male.
All the best,
Michael Bell,
Bainbridge,
