Earl Horn and I birded several areas in Polk and Haralson Cos. today,
with the highlight being the sparrows at J. L. Lester WMA in Polk Co.
We had 9 species of sparrows, including a Lincoln's Sparrow across
Antioch Rd. from the jeep trail to the pond, and about 10 White-crowned
Sparrows a little further up the dirt road, also across the road from
the trail entrance, and 6 Vespers Sparrows, most near the jeep trail.
In the fields around the pond itself, we observed hundreds of Savannah
Sparrows, and had a decent selection of waterbirds.
In Harlason Co., we made several stops along stream crossings in the
eastern part of the county, and also stopped at Evelyn S. Wade Lake, aka
Lake Olympia, aka Lake Buchanan. Few highlights in Harlason Co., but we
did find a Brown Creeper and a couple of Winter Wrens. Wade Lake
produced a flock of Ring-necked Ducks, a few Hooded Mergansers, and one
lone male Lesser Scaup.
A quick stop on the way back to Atlanta at Sweetwater Creek produced
only a handful of Ruddy Ducks and a few Cormorants.
Here are the results from the day:
