  Nigel,
     It is the same on this side of the pond.  The 'british' ounce is %20 larger than the US ounce.  I have no idea how that came about but,...
     That difference took some of the sting out of buying gasoline/petrol and made beer a downright steal while I was over ther in the mid-70s.
