For anyone following this thread:
- Google have added heirarchical browsing and view thread to their
Usenet search.
- Posting remains unavailable and likely will for some time, though
it's on the feature list.
- Current updates are once daily, though this is likely to increase
over time.
- Current archives are through 2000, though backlogs through 1995 (and
prior?) are to be added.
I've mentioned my severe disappointment with Deja (formerly DejaNews) in
the past -- they were once a useful search engine. For the past two
years or so I've only found the service usable when mediated by a third
party web interface or command line utilities.
I've written more on the recent aquisition at LinuxToday:
http://linuxtoday.com/news_story.php3?ltsn/2001-02-22-003-04-PS-CY-0007
I've also suggested in the past, to Deja and SI, that SI might be
interested in seeing that the SAS-L archive be made and remain available
through a third-party resource such as Deja. I'd encourage SI and its
tech support branch to contact Google and find out if there is any way
SI might be able to provide assistance in maintaining the SAS-L archive,
and/or providing historical archives dating to the formation of SAS-L.
There's also a FAQ with status and issues at Google's website.
