Rusty, if I may, I would like to explain that the list to which you refer is indeed a mailing list, but an internet list in the nature that hotmail is a mailer and it is not a Listserv mailing list.

This is taken from the LISTSERV manual:

"LISTSERV (R) is a registered trademark licensed to L-Soft international, Inc."

I have an eGroups list myself -- don't laugh - called BarbarasLaughList in which a few friends share jokes.

Lists that are listserv lists are GABO-L (from the University of Georgia), FLORIDABIRDS-L (University of Florida), BirdChat, BirdEast, etc., (University of Arizona), and many others. All listservs share commands in common and have fantastic programs for archiving. The universities I deal with have a LISTSERV staff to assist in forming and running the lists.

It would be hoped that all birding lists could be Listserv lists but unfortunately it is easy to set up the commercial internet lists which work fine for small groups.

Advertising is the cost of these lists unless someone wants to pay a charge to prevent the advertising. Unlike university based lists, there are no rules from the list barring commercial advertising by the subscribers. Some may view this as an advantage.

To conclude, the proper reference should be, no, there is no Listserv mailing list, but there is an eGroups.com (note the"com") internet list.

Just for the record. :-)
