Earl Horn and I did a bit of birding in middle Georgia today, spending most of our time in Dodge, Wheeler and Telfair Cos. As with the rest of the eastern US, it was particularly cool for most of the day, and quite breezy at certain locations.

While we did not have anything real unusual, we found a lot of migrants, including 16 species of warblers, Gray-cheeked Thrushes at several locations, a couple of newly-arrived winter residents (Yellow-bellied Sapsucker and Ruby-crowned Kinglet), and a very large flock of Black Vultures (over 200 birds) on the Telfair side of Little Ocmulgee SP.

We started pre-dawn in eastern Pulaski Co., where we discovered a couple of Eastern Screech-Owls and also had a few thrushes fly over.

We then moved in Dodge Co., again seeking owls, and finding a few Eastern Screech-Owls, but no other species of owl.

After dawn broke, be birded in several areas in western Dodge Co., mostly along the county roads northwest of Eastman. We also visited Dodge Co. Public Fishing Area (located off of US341/US23 south of Eastman).

From there, we left for Little Ocmulgee State Park on the Wheeler/Telfair Co. line. Although the lake here looks prime for waterfowl, I guess it's just a little early, as we had only Pied-billed Grebes. There was also the aforementioned large flock of Black Vultures kettling across the lake in Telfair Co.

From Little Ocmulgee, we birded a little in Telfair Co., and finally the southern portion of Riverbend WMA in southwestern Laurens Co. We witnessed the first break in the clouds at the latter location, and although there was very little bird activity, it was quite good for butterflies.
