GA Birders,
I stopped by Buford Dam at Lake Lanier this morning to see what birds were
passing through. I had not been down at the lower pool area all summer. To
my surprise the Corp of Engineers put in a new trail system! It is called
North Bowman's Island. The trail is for hiking and equestrian activities
and winds through the forest and along the river. I did not have much time
to check out all the trails, but picked up about 34 species there and the
areas below the dam. Here are the highlights:
Eastern Screech-Owl 2
Eastern Wood-Pewee 1
Eastern Phoebe 1
White-eyed Vireo 2
Red-eyed Vireo 1
Sedge Wren 1
Ruby-crowned Kinglet 2
Blue-gray Gnatcatcher 1
Wood Thrush 1
Gray Catbird 2
Tennesse Warbler 2
Magnolia Warbler 5
Black-throated Blue Warbler 1
Hooded Warbler 4
Indigo Bunting 3
Directions to the North Bowman's Island area (Delorme pg. 21, D6-E6). Take
the road across Buford Dam and you will see a gravel road just west of the
powerhouse on the dam. Follow this gravel road down towards the river and
park in the first parking lot on the right. The trail head starts there at
the little bridge.
Take Care,
Rusty Trump
