I couldn't agree more. I even suspect that Ian was 'teasing' me!
In this particular case, however, I imagine that Paul would probably be the
first to agree that, fascinating though they are, the sort of techniques
(and the associated quirks/bugs) we are discussing here are probably more
important as intellectual exercises than they are 'safe' as SAS techniques.
Poke/peek(c) techniques which are dependent upon how a particular version
of SAS stores its variable values are, as we've seen, potentially hazardous
- and, at least theoretically (although we'd hope that SI won't
re-introduce the 'bug'), not guaranteed to be compatible with future
releases of SAS.
