HASUG MEETING ANNOUNCEMENT - May 18th

Just a Reminder - This coming Thursday !!!

The second quarter HASUG meeting is to be held on Thursday, May 18, 2000, 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at CIGNA in Bloomfield, Connecticut. Please pre-register for the meeting via email by sending a message saying you will be attending to Barbara.Moss@CIGNA.com.

Our first presentation will be by Scott Mebust, SAS Institute, Inc.. Scott will present, "Version 8 Base SAS Performance: How Does It Stack Up?". A study conducted at SAS Institute Inc. compared the time-domain performance of several key parts of the Base SAS system at Version 8 and Version 6. The performance of the DATA Step, the SORT procedure, the SUMMARY procedure and the SQL procedure will be compared on four platforms: OS/390, Windows NT, Solaris and HP-UX. Although the focus of this study was non-printing applications, some ODS related tests will be presented for the DATA Step and the TABULATE procedure. Special attention will be given to changes in PROC SORT and PROC SUMMARY that improved their performance over Version 6.

Scott is a graduate of North Carolina State University in Raleigh, with a bachelor's degree in Computer Science. He has concentrated on performance analysis and improvement of Base SAS procedures including SORT, RANK, STANDARD, and TRANSPOSE.

Our second presentation will be by Michael Davis. Michael will present, " Now that You Have Version 8, What Do You Do?" Perhaps your company has installed Version 8 of the SAS System, skipping Version 7. You may have read about some of new features of Version 8 but are not quite sure where to start.

What do you do? The goal of this presentation is to help such users sort out Version 8 and to identify some features to explore early on.

Beginning with a brief review of the most universally attractive enhancements of Version 8 compared to Version 6, Michael will highlight the enhancements to the SAS language and data libraries, Output Delivery System (ODS), and procedure improvements. Next, navigating Version 8 with the SAS Explorer will be demonstrated, illustrating how to move from reviewing libraries through program creation and ending with examining SAS output. The last part of this presentation will explore compatibility of data sets and catalogs between Version 6 and Version 8 and make recommendations regarding conversion issues.

Michael Davis is Vice President of Bassett Consulting Services, Inc., a SAS Institute Quality Partner™. An independent consultant since 1994, he previously worked for Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Connecticut and the Connecticut Hospital Association. A SAS user since 1985, Michael specializes in creating SAS/AF FRAME and SAS/IntrNet web-enabled applications. He is a past chairman of the Hartford Area SAS Users Group and is a frequent presenter and section chair at NESUG and SUGI. Michael is also the president of the Connecticut Chapter of the Independent Computer Consultants Association.

Our third presentation will be by Judy Sullivan, presenting a paper written by Rene Laurencot, "SAS Version 8 ODS for Drug Safety Reporting (Without the Use of HTML)". This presentation will explore how well suited the ODS (Output Delivery System) is to producing drug safety reporting tables in PostScript format. Judy will also show ODS syntax and methods of changing font style, size and other options.

Judy has been a SAS programmer in the pharmaceutical industry for 12 years. Currently she manages a SAS Development group of 10 programmers at Pfizer Inc. in New London. Her expertise is in applying formal software development principles and lifecycle techniques to SAS-based programming and the integration of SAS with Internet technology. This work contributed to Pfizer receiving the SAS Enterprise Award in 1997. Judy has a masters degree in Zoology from the University of Connecticut.
